How is ETAP Used to Manage the Distribution System for the Tabuk region on the Red Sea

I hope that this case study, my brief introduction to the application of the TDMS system, can bring something new and valuable to everyone from the perspective of EPC. This project was designed to support the growing population and economic activities in the region, driving economic growth and improving quality of life. Sustainability and efficiency are the basic targets of the product, which aims to leverage renewable energy sources and implement advanced technologies to ensure environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.
by Ms. Haishan Wang, SEPCOIII

In 2019, SEPCOIII was chosen as the EPC contractor for the large-scale Tidia Entertainment City project in Saudi Arabia. The project spans approximately 28,000 square kilometers and encompasses lands, islands, beaches, deserts, mountains, and volcanic areas. This luxury tourism development project, located in Tabuk Province, Saudi Arabia, aims to create a high-end destination offering unparalleled marine and environmental attractions for Red Sea tourism. Learn how SEPCOIII relied on ETAP's Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) to assist with the technology challenges for the project’s distributed energy power system, and how the solution is being used to manage and supervise the power distribution system to achieve better optimizations and improve system stability.

Real-time electric power monitoring

Challenges

  • The project is vast in scale, encompassing multiple renewable energy sources and networks. Its goal is to enable real-time electric power management and monitoring. The initiative also seeks to enhance support for large power grids, incorporating variable distribution parameters and coordinating multiple energy sources.
  • Key objectives include optimizing operations, improving visualization, and refining asset management across complex electrical networks. A crucial challenge is to implement real-time monitoring that minimizes the need for maintenance and site visits, streamlines workflows, and centralizes the management of work orders.
  • Additionally, integrating large volumes of local asset data into a unified database with robust data protection measures is essential. The user platform and associated dashboards should be seamlessly linked to real-time data from the field, utilizing predictive analytics and event forecasting to support decision-making.

Which solutions do they choose?

Selected applications

They chose ETAP, a full turnkey real-time solution, for centralized and remote network operations and management, based on the digital twin model of the electrical network to have a Transmission Distribution Management System (TDMS). All scopes of processes are managed by ETAP software, from the Design step, by Build step, to the Operate step.

The city-scale Microgrid management solution proposed by ETAP was chosen: ETAP Digital Twin Modeling, ETAP SCADA, ETAP Power Management System, ETAP operator Training Simulator, ETAP Protection Asset Management, ETAP Arc Flash, ETAP Protection and Coordination, ETAP Power Flow, ETAP Distribution Network Analysis, ETAP Intelligent load Shedding, ETAP Microgrid, ETAP Mobile APP, ETAP NetPM. All the applications for planning, designing, modeling, and operating with geospatial visualization were chosen.

Why do they use Etap?

Main Customer Benefits

  • Real-time power managing, monitoring, and visibility of the large-scale electrical network with microgrids and solar based on digital modeling.
  • Actual electrical information about the network and assets with easy accessibility, analysis, and maintenance prediction.
  • Clear project execution procedure from planning, user requirements, system design, integration on site, tests, site acceptance, start-up, and user training.
  • Saving money and time by reducing visits and maintenance in the farthest locations.

What do they think about ETAP?

Opinions

The objectives of ETAP TDMS are to provide a shared network model and a common user experience for all rules that are required to monitor, control, and optimize the secure operation of the electrical distribution network, to maximize reliability, and allow users to benefit from cost optimization. For example, TDMS can dramatically reduce the operation team, which can save you huge operating costs. In this project, the ETF TDMS system shows a very good ability and performance in the control system.
