How Kuwait Oil Company optimizes electrical systems and improves asset management with ETAP

An innovative approach for managing power reservations, monitoring power usage, and coordinating effectively for optimized power allocation.
Nahed Al-Hejeri, Projects Management Team Leader, Kuwait Oil Company

Kuwait Oil Company recognized the need for an integrated electrical information management system (EIMS) for electrical power management, with the goal to significantly improve resource optimization across their organization and enhance coordination with relevant teams. It was initiated following the success of a prior case study with ETAP, which led to the adoption of ETAP for electrical system modeling.

Areas for improvement

  • Absence of a unified management system for access to electrical assets
  • Inefficient coordination of power reservation work orders, approvals, tracking and notifications
  • Difficulties obtaining comprehensive visualizations and connectivity data for real-time power monitoring

Products used

  • NetPM - Network project management for collaborative tasks
  • eSCADA – Real-time model-driven electrical system control and data acquisition
  • ETAP GIS - Geospatial electrical diagram
  • ETAP eWeb - Web-based simulation, monitoring, and reporting
  • ETAP App - Mobile field data collection and synchronization

What we delivered

  • Geospatial visualization of multiple networks under one platform
  • System analysis insights and collaboration to ensure real-time updates
  • Integrated reservation request and work order management for improved resource optimization
  • Improved overall power system reliability and efficiency

Outcomes

Improved power management and resource optimization

  • Accelerated decision-making
  • Reduction in site visits
  • Enhanced reliability
  • Expedited workflows

Real time power monitoring and visibility of the KOC Distribution Network in one place, reduced the number of site visits. All updated and latest information is clearly defined in the system and available online.

How Kuwait Oil Company optimizes electrical systems and improves asset management with ETAP

This presentation discusses the Electrical Information Management System (EIMS) in use at Kuwait Oil Company, a power reservation model-based integration solution designed for oil and gas production. The aim was to achieve flexible and configurable approval workflows, integrated with user access management and various notification methods, to optimize operation, enhance visualization, and improve asset management within their complex electrical networks. Their EIMS integrates smart meters with ETAP and GIS, enabling efficient communication, real-time updates, and enhanced reliability of the electrical system. The pilot project includes real-time power monitoring, reduced site visits, expedited workflow, and centralized management of work order processes. The presentation also covers the challenges faced in power reservation planning and the specific ETAP solutions implemented, including NetPM and ETAP eWeb.
