How Skyworks improved energy efficiency in manufacturing with ETAP Digital Twin and PSMS

Today I will present a case study on the ETAP Real-time solution we implemented for Skyworks in Mexico, focusing on the key challenges, the implementation process, and the end-user benefits of this project.

Skyworks has been a customer of ETAP since 2019 and they already had a Digital-Twin of their electrical system at the medium voltage level. They decided to expand their capabilities by including predictive simulation and situational intelligence. This case study presents ETAP PSMS and eScada solutions launched in Skyworks Mexico. This deployment has resulted in high-quality electrical network monitoring and numerous other benefits.

Real-time management of the electrical system for the plant

Challenges

  • To find an accurate way of controlling the energy costs of all the plant processes.
  • Overseeing the plant's electrical system, encompassing medium and low voltage operations, while ensuring optimal power quality.
  • Expanding capabilities to include predictive simulation to improve the reliability of the entire electrical system.
  • Increasing the energy efficiency of the entire electrical operation.
  • Having the right information at the right time to decide on system requirements and improvements.
  • Ensuring compliance with Mexico's national grid code and standards.

Which solutions do they choose?

Selected applications

Skyworks has been a customer of ETAP since 2019 and they already had a Digital-Twin of their electrical system at the medium voltage level. To expand the capabilities by including the predictive simulation, they added Power System Monitoring & Simulation (PSMS) and eScada solutions, which facilitate network monitoring, and operation with grid visualization on computers, tablets and mobiles.

Why do they use Etap?

Main Customer Benefits

  • Integrating all monitoring, alarming, and analysis functions into a single ETAP platform.
  • Saving money by integration: The ETAP solution did not replace the existing communication infrastructure but integrated it, using existing metering and protection equipment.
  • Situational awareness of their entire electrical system from one single integrated platform, reducing the need to maintain several different systems.
  • Energy accounting for different production processes, which enables cost optimization.
  • Avoidance of potential penalties by ensuring their compliance with Mexico's national grid code.

What do they think about ETAP?

Opinions

Very important [...] was that ETAP has a center of insolence in Mexico that could provide strong Technical Support in Spanish, which gave Skyworks the certainty of local Technical Support throughout the project implementation and for the future.
