The City of Azusa relies on ETAP to Operate & Optimize the Electrical Network

We strongly believe that ETAP eSCADA is the tool needed to accomplish our mission of providing reliable service to our valuable customers.
Hien Vuong, Assistant General Manager – Electric Operations, City of Azusa

In 2021, the Light & Water department for this growing municipality realized the then-existing infrastructure no longer met its needs and expectations. They recognized the potential benefits of a fully integrated, unified platform, and embarked on this case study.

Challenges

  • Relying on different systems for various applications, data management, and transfer was inefficient and prone to errors.
  • The lack of local support was also a concern.

Solution

They chose ETAP, a complete turnkey solution, for centralized and remote network operations and management based on the digital twin model of their electrical network.

eSCADA software was implemented for substation operations and load management

Benefits

Within months, working hand-in-hand with ETAP engineers, a new SCADA system for substation operation and load management was commissioned. The City of Azusa is now able to closely monitor their substations and loads of each feeder. This is essential during summer months with peak loads averaging 60 MW compared to the normal average of 40 MW.

Substation Configuration

  • Electric Division maintains and operates 2 12 KV distribution substations
  • 20 feeders combined consist of 66 miles of overhead & 59 miles of underground feeder lines
  • Average Summer peak load is 60 MW, normal peak load average is 40 MW
