How ETAP Digital Modeling Helps to Develop and Manage Critical Power Solutions for Data Centers

The main advantages are the real-time value and monitoring of this electrical network, the navigation inside the network, and the ability to see any incident in real-time from the graphics, the control room level, and the real-time load flow. The network topology has continuous ratings and updates the electrical systems topology, such as branch impedance, loading, connectivity, breaker status, etc. Users can also track and record unusual activities with the event logging and alarming tools, allowing for early detection and announcement of problems before a critical failure occurs.

As computing requirements continue to increase, data centers become a more significant portion of the total worldwide load. The monitoring solutions for these data centers must be intelligent to maintain a reliable, safe, and efficient asset. In this case study, we will explore one such data center that utilizes the ETAP eSCADA/PMS solution to achieve an optimal data center. Etisalat, a multinational Emirati-based telecommunications provider operating in approximately 15 countries across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, uses this data center.

To build the largest and state-of-the-art Data Center in the Middle East

Challenges

  • The data center should host mission-critical applications that deliver high availability and business continuity.
  • It should ensure rigorous environmental standards and reduce the cost of IT ownership for its customers worldwide.
  • To find complex software that covers the project requirements, a solution to monitor, control, optimize, and manage the electrical network.
  • The software should be a model-based Scada system for the complete range of Operations and the Power Monitoring System on a single platform.
  • The highly redundant SCADA system shall primarily monitor and, to a limited extent, control high-voltage and low-voltage switchgear, including vendor packages such as generators, dynamic UPS, various field devices, BMS power monitoring units, etc.
  • Creating the extended Digital Model of the data center and power distribution assets with the possibility to develop.
  • To use manufacturing datasheets and equipment specifications with electrical and mechanical data, and to consider environmental conditions like temperature.

Which solutions did they choose?

Selected applications

They chose ETAP Digital Twin modeling with eScada and PMS to drive digital transformation and introduce digital solutions from design to implementation and operations. The digital twin model-based approach and an electrical integrated with power system design and power monitoring system were the main reasons that they chose the ETAP solution.

ETAP ensures compliance with all electrical design standards, calculations, maintenance, and operation.

Why do they use ETAP?

Main Customer Benefits

  • Unique one model-based solution with SCADA system and Power Monitoring Solution, based on controllers in the field with Ring topology communication and HMIs.
  • The integrated digital twin platform provided an active blueprint designed as a multi-level model. Users can expand each element to achieve greater detail and granularity. The actual electrical network topology is accessible online.
  • The SCADA system solution enables network modeling, simulation, analysis, and operational tools for designing, simulating, operating, controlling, and optimizing power network systems.
  • Predicting the electrical system's behavior and suggesting potential actions is crucial for effective predictive maintenance in data centers.
  • Real-time load flow calculates the bus voltage, branch power factors, currents, and power flows throughout the electrical system. ETAP also supports swing voltage-regulated and unregulated power sources, as well as multiple power grids and generator connections.
  • The real-time short circuit analyzes the effect of three-phase, line-to-ground, line-to-line, and line-to-line-to-ground faults on the electrical distribution systems.

What do they think about ETAP?

Opinions

ETAP has real-time applications, so when you go to the applications, you see various application levels. You can view the event playback network topology state, load estimation, real-time load flow, and real-time short-circuit switching management. It allows for early detection and announcement of problems before the critical failure takes place, which is the key element for any data center operation in terms of the client and operator's perspective.
