Learn How EnergyTron Company Uses ETAP GIS Data to Optimize Modeling Efficiency

ETAP has been a great partner for EnergyTron's electrical wing. We have been working together over the past few years, delivering numerous projects, and we will continue to cooperate closely in the future. I'll also be discussing or referencing the term GIS, which, in this case, refers to a Geographic Information System. This differs from the electrical term, where gas-insulated systems or gas-insulated switchgear are used. Therefore, the GIS is a crucial aspect of larger distribution network designs.

This case study explains how ETAP GIS Map has direct communication with ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute) geodatabase and map documents. ETAP and EnergyTron collaborate to integrate GIS data into electrical power system software, streamlining the design process for brownfield projects by providing valuable information on existing electrical assets and terrain features. However, the success of this integration relies on the accuracy and completeness of the GIS data.

Geo-reference electrical distribution network design

Challenges

  • Having a virtual model of an extensive electrical distribution network for 3 million customers living in a large area, to allow system analysis.
  • Localizing the electrical distribution network geographically, and creating geographical maps of power generation, transmission, underground installation, and distribution systems, to allow the start of the design process.
  • Having an actual database about the assets used in the network, with all possible parameters, and start to make asset management online. Merging the field data into the virtual model.
  • Keeping the information and keeping the knowledge about the network up to date, despite changes in the workforce. Updating single-line diagrams.
  • Creating a digital experience for employees with easy access to information about current situations in the network, which we can refer to as situational intelligence.

Which solutions did they choose?

Selected applications

They selected the ETAP solution. They cooperate with ETAP GIS Integration Services, utilizing the ETAP Base module with the ESRI ArcGIS Interface and the ETAP Universal Mapping Tool to create an interactive tool for accessing, analyzing, and managing geo-linked information, as well as leveraging a digital twin electrical network model.

The primary solution is the ETAP GIS Integration, which can extract electrical data from the GIS network with georeferences and import it into the ETAP model.

Why do they use Etap?

Main Customer Benefits

  • Time saving during studies, by using the actual data model integrated with GIS.
  • Error avoidance in the design, by easy identification of issues, such as crossing cables from different energy sources with varying levels of voltage.
  • Visualization of the electrical network topology in an easy-to-use map view
  • ETAP digital twin GIS model of the network, integrating all installations on the ground and underground.
  • Real-time power monitoring and visibility of electrical networks based on digital modeling.
  • Actual electrical information about the network with easy accessibility on any tool connected to the internet.
  • A flexible and modular system that continuously evolves while maintaining high efficiency and usability.
  • Saving money and time by reducing visits and maintenance in the farthest locations.

What do they think about ETAP?

Opinions

Expanding the data to a larger area, encompassing almost 3 million customers, and redrawing it in ETAP would be a massive job. So, ETAP has produced the geo-reference distribution network, our topic today. ETAP can extract data from the GIS network and the field survey and then populate or extract it into a virtual model.
Mr. Khandoker Wahidul Islam, Principal Electrical Engineer, EnergyTron

We have been working on this specific product for over two years, and ETAP has been very open and supportive. We are seeing that ETAP 22 has many of those capabilities.
