Learn how Honeywell Uses ETAP ADMS to Build the Smart City in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital ACUD

The ETAP ADMS system promotes true digital transformation at every project stage. The process starts with design thinking by providing the necessary tools for digitization of the design, moving into the creation of the hybrid model, then the asset repository, and the creation of the digital twin model for digital automation and visualization.

This interesting case study focuses on the advanced distribution management system ADMS in the context of smart cities and city operations centers in Egypt's new administrative capital, ACUD. Honeywell is the main technology, platform, and integration provider in this project. ETAP joined the team to provide the smart grid solution.

The Smart City concept

Challenges

  • Identify capable providers and partners offering a comprehensive solution for the new concept: a digitized city. The electrical grid is the primary topic in such a project.
  • Making the conception, designing, and realization of the conceptual vision according to governmental needs and rules.
  • The main challenge is connecting all city citizens, visitors, and residents to digitized services, starting with government services and moving on to city services. These services should be easy to understand for users and should promote implementation.
  • Providing a digital journey for service staff, such as electrical, water, gas, internet, communication, information, and traffic. Integrating information in a single data source of knowledge about city processes with a security regime.
  • Modeling the hybrid system of the electrical network. Start remotely supervising and operating the distribution network, integrating substation protection and control to achieve real-time electric power monitoring on valuable dashboards.
  • Promoting accurate digital solutions at every project stage, from concept to build and maintenance.
  • Start remotely supervising and operating the distribution network, integrating substation protection and control to achieve real-time electric power monitoring on valuable dashboards.
  • The system should be open to connect the newly developed neighborhoods and other energy sources shortly.
  • Start remotely supervising and operating the distribution network, integrating substation protection and control to achieve real-time electric power monitoring on valuable dashboards.

Which solutions did they choose?

Selected applications

They selected ETAP ADMS, recommended by Honeywell Company, for a comprehensive turnkey Real-Time electrical digital twin solution. This solution supports centralized and remote network operations and management, utilizing a digital twin electrical network model including GIS data. The ETAP eOTS training system is used for operators training.

The primary solution is the ADMS and eScada software, which facilitates network monitoring and operation with grid visualization on computers, tablets, and mobile devices.

Why do they use ETAP?

Main Customer Benefits

  • Digitization of electrical design, completing the single-line diagrams using natural tools, unlike the old techniques of AutoCAD drawings. When designers create the electrical model, they onboard imported diagrams automatically.
  • Creation of the electrical hybrid model includes the integration or the acquisition the geospatial GIS data, with analytical and predictive functions. The exact location of the assets is used, with all information from the site.
  • Creation of a Data repository with a big data portfolio and the creation of the digital twin model for digital automation and visualization.
  • Integration with other enterprise systems, including customer information systems and IoT data-enabled systems, through digital operation and maintenance in the field workforce management.
  • Integrated City Operation Center for electrical grid of the city. Operator receives alerts, events, alarms, and incidents from all the different services across the Smart city. Visualization of the system in a unified dashboard for all the details and locations required across the city is crucial.
  • Managers can make real-time power monitoring with excellent visibility of electrical networks based on digital modeling. They can understand the correlation between the electrical grid and all the other critical parts of the businesses across the city, because any outage or challenges in the grid will be directly visible in the data center. Natural visualization allows city managers and CEOs to understand how to manage the city better.
  • Providing capacity-building tools for our team, operators, and operation team on the ground. The eOTS tool allows to train operations using simulators. These simulate the exact situation user will face while operating critical systems such as the ADMS system and the Smarter grid for electrical assets. The Operator Training Simulator also provides many "what if" analyses or "what if" scenarios for the operators.
  • Powerful and robust energy restoration process, maintaining the minimum possible effect of outages. The ETAP ADMS system provided this, ultimately promoting the resilient power distribution network, integrated into the Smart city concept.
