Learn how ETAP helps in Electrical Protection and Coordination Studies by using the Newest Online Solutions

ETAP allows a combined tabular and graphical view to have a complete understanding of the electrical system. It's very useful the automated protection zone identification.

This use case shows a practical example of an internal review of a protection coordination study, including the definition of protective device settings and characteristics, an online correction and modification, a combined tabular and graphical view, and others.

Processing the Protection and Coordination Studies in the high-quality method

Challenges

  • Identifying the appropriate tool to create a high-quality Protection and Coordination Study that complies with industry standards and learning it.
  • Modeling the electrical system used by the customer. Every electrical model and every situation are different, and the combinations of types of transformers, motors, relays, and breakers are unique.
  • Creating the study by a certified electrical protection engineer using all visual and tabular possibilities.
  • Verify and validate proposed protection settings and proposed coordination.
  • Tracking changes and modifications to meet Power Distribution Center (PDC) criteria.
  • It is essential to include typical cases and emergency scenarios in an understandable report and provide interactive visuals to explain complex scenarios to stakeholders.
  • Evaluating cases and operations with clear visualizations of processes, ensuring that real-time simulations are presented understandably.

Which solutions did they choose?

Selected applications

They chose ETAP Safety & Protection Products, such as StarZ Auto Evaluation and others, to work on an easy and flexible platform for analyzing power distribution systems.

The ETAP solution guaranteed compatibility with electrical standards, yearly updates, and support.

Why do they use ETAP?

Main Customer Benefits

  • ETAP's Digital model of the electrical grid, specific to the customer's electrical network, is useful now and in the future. Digital Twin is the main thing we need to do for every grid.
  • ETAP is a single tool for multiple electrical analyses. Users can analyze short circuits, protection coordination, and others on the same platform. Thanks to this, he can see the correlation between settings, the types of equipment, and cables. It dramatically reduces the time spent on studies and increases awareness of the operation.
  • After the manager validates them, operators can apply the electrical settings directly in the real-time system. Thanks to the embedded rulebooks, the process is tracked and verified, and its history is recorded automatically.
  • High-quality reporting using a combined tabular and graphical view, with online visibility and accessibility, was delivered.
  • ETAP StarZ automatically identifies the protection zone. The user can work with a simple motor or transformer or even select all switchboards to find possible events, such as overheating.
  • The ETAP Digital Twin model means that users can manage multiple configurations and case studies for modeled electrical networks in the future. If we can use eScada to collect data and automation tools to control and regulate equipment on the site, we will have the system from Design to Operation. It is an electrical engineer's dream.

What do they think about ETAP?

Opinions

The main benefit of ETAP is that it has a very controlling technique, a similar way to verify the setting and protection across the various devices or similar technologies. We can immediately view the various alert flags and so on. We can easily expand and verify each element one by one.

I can click on the StarZ evaluation during analyze. ETAP StarZ auto evaluation has the possibility to automatically compare the setting with a predefined criteria rule. The idea is to automatically compare all the settings I already have inside my protection coordination, and I can verify if there is inconsistency between the criteria and selected criteria.
